Kushinagr. For Buddhists, Kushinagar is no less than any Kashi and Kaaba. This is the same place where Tathagata Lord Buddha gave his last sermon. In this same Kushinagar, on the day of Baishakh Purnima, he had left this mortal world, that is, had attained Nirvana.

At that time the name of this city was 'Kushavati'. Apart from this, Kushinagar has been described as one of the 16 Mahajanapadas in the Tripitaka of Pali literature. At that time it used to be the capital of the Malla kings, which was known as 'Kushinara'.

According to Buddhist literature, at the end of the fifth century BC, the feet of Lord Buddha were lying in Kushinagar. Lord Budha along with his disciples arrived at Kushinagar, the capital of the Malla kings. And it was here that Lord Buddha fell ill and attained Nivarna under a Salva tree. There is a temple named Mathakunvar at this place, in which there is a lying statue of Lord Buddha.
